4 Tips to Help Prevent Underpaid or Denied Claims

Texas gets a lot of hail, which means that hail claims are a dime a dozen. Unfortunately, a lot of these claims are underpaid or just flat-out denied. There are several reasons why this could happen. Knowing how to prevent these scenarios from happening will not only ensure you have a better claims outcome (should you have to file), but it can save you loads of time in the process. Here’s our advice on how you can protect yourself from a faulty claim decision.

1. Get your roof inspected every single year.

Even if there weren’t any storms, a roof inspection report is proof to your insurance carrier that you continuously cared for your roof, and it can be the proof you need to show that there was no pre-existing damage when a storm does hit and you need to make a claim.

2. As soon as it’s safe, take pictures of the hailstones!

As soon as it’s safe to do so, get pictures of the hailstones in your hand to prove size. Ideally get several pictures of the hail beside a quarter, golf ball, car keys, etc. Lastly, make sure your home or an identifying marker is in the photo. This can prove instrumental later!

3. After a storm, contact a local roofing company then your insurance.

Insurance companies believe it is the policyholders’ responsibility to take steps to prevent future damage. You may need to make emergency repairs right away, even before your insurance adjuster can make it to your property. At the very least, a local roofer will be able to assess the damage and give you an estimate for the repair costs. You can then compare to your insurance estimate and see if you need to contest it.

4. Keep records and know your warranties.

If you’ve fixed your roof recently, make sure you have records of what was done and of any warranties (manufacturer’s and installer’s) that came along with it. If your insurance adjuster determines the damage was installer error or faulty manufacturing, you might need this information.
